Technology development of high value carbon black pyrolysised by waste tire applied in PCR ply layer

In the past, the bottleneck on technology in waste tire pyrolysis was how to upgrade the quality of carbon black, and value-heighten its appilication. In order to rise the recycling value of waste tire, The Foundation was very luck to invite Enrestec Incorporation to provide his pyrolysis facilities and technology, optimized the process parameters to produce carbon black according to the requirement of the project. Kenda Rubber Industrial Co., LTD, was also invited to provide his mixing and testing facilities, evaluated the physical and kinetic properties of rubber compound, which contained carbon black from pyrolysis of waste tire. We expect to find the optimal waste tire pyrolysis process and conditions, which will produce carbon black applicable for body plies in passenger tire. Though the assistance and corporation given by Enrestec Inc. and Kenda Rubber Ind. Co., Ltd., this project was completed smoothly. It concludes the achievements as following: -By introducing a pulverizing system and wet pelletizing system to waste tire pyrolysis process, and optimizing the pyrolysis conditions, carbon block produced will be with lower toluene extractable content, lower grit, uniform pellet size and appropriate pellet hardness. This project successfully proved that carbon black above is applicable to body plies in passenger tire to replace furnace black N-330 by 20% minimum. -This project also proved that, if carbon black used in body plies in passenger tire is replaced 20% by above carbon black, the cost of carbon black will be down 10% minimum, and the carbon footprint will be reduced 16% at least. In other words, if above carbon block can be promoted to replace 10,000 ton/yr furnace black in domestic tire industry, the domestic tire industry will yearly save NTD 0.18 billion and 27.7 k tone respectively. -Though this project, to upgrade the quality of carbon black produced, the optimized operation conditions of waste tire pyrolysis process and the specifications of carbon black also confirmed. -The direction of future R&D on value- heighten applications to carbon black produced by waste tire pyrolysis was also concluded at the end of this project.

Quality dependence: The tensile strength, elongation, modulus, tear strength and hardness of rubber compound depend on the qualities of carbon black produced by pyrolysis of waste tyre, those qualities including: the surface area determined by Iodine absorption, toluene extractable materials content determined by photometer, sieve residue by water washing, as well as pelletizing process. Replaceability: If we replace 20% and 30% of N-330 in PCR ply layer compound by carbon black produced by pyrolysis of waste tyre, will meet all the target preset by us. Currently, Enrestec’ pyrolysis black is proved to be able to apply in type’s ply compound to replace furnace black by 20%, we hope Enrestec can narrow down the quality variation to increase the usage in type application. At the same time, we also encourage Enrestec to divide their black into several grades to develop the applications in rubber industry.
